This map was sent to me by the Sierra Club. It indicates that as many as six locations are being sought by investors who would export coal from ports in Washington and Oregon.
I believe that Bellingham has the only terminal that could service large deep-draft vessels without dredging. The two Lower Columbia River facilities have been dredged recently, ostensibly for grain export terminals. The Boardman port seems to be the least desirable because it would require barges to transfer the coal down the Columbia. If you know something about the Coos Bay and Grays Harbor sites, please reply in the comments section. I have a feeling that the 14th LD and Columbia Riverkeepers are both opposed to interminable coal car traffic along the River and to a rapidly increasing rate of coal extraction from the Powder River Basin. In four to six years, the market for U.S. coal will drop drastically as Mongolian coal becomes available.
