Those multinational coal companies are back with new export port permit applications. This newspaper account suggests that Longview is agog with anticipation. To us it is a different story and any benefits look very parochial and time limited at that. Within a decade the market for Wyoming coal will collapse because Mongolian coal will be cheaper. (We can hope so.)
Would sending coal down river on barges be less destructive to the way of life in the gorge? Can the Governor and legislature be convinced that state taxpayers should not pay for any new infrastructure at or near the old Reynold’s property or the Port of Longview?
